Lions Club serves community – Published in the July 11-17 edition of the JC Sentinel
This week’s Member Spotlight is on the Tishomingo Lions Club! Lions Club International is the world’s largest and most active service club in the world and began in 1917. Their motto, ‘We Serve’ was adopted in 1954 and there are now 47,000 clubs around the world with over 1.4 million members. The Tishomingo chapter began in 1929 and its first president, Richard M. McCool, was a Congressional Medal of Honor recipient.
The Tishomingo Lions Club has been an integral part of the community, and its members have helped those in need. The Club was instrumental in bringing to Tishomingo, and relocating to the Johnston County War Memorial, the Naval Blue Angel Jet. The group worked with local health agencies to install a helipad at the Johnston County Memorial Hospital, now Mercy Tishomingo, and raised funds to purchase the jaws of life for the Tishomingo Fire Department. Each year the Lions Club sponsors the Little Indian Football and Cheerleading programs and a Student of the Month program, giving Johnston County senior high school students the opportunity to earn a scholarship.
The Tishomingo Lions Club recently held their officer installation ceremony on July 2nd and new club officers are as follows: Woody Jumper, President; Oma Dell Burns, 1st Vice-President; Jordyn Frazier, 2nd Vice-President; Shelley Boyd, Secretary; Jennifer Justice, Treasurer; Tom Lokey, Tail Twister; Paul Roan, Lion Tamer; Melissa Lawson, Chelsey Van Horn and John Sikes, and immediate past president, Pam Walker, board directors.
The Lions Club is a membership organization made up of retired citizens, business owners, organizational leaders, and local volunteers. They would love for you to join them and consider membership! They meet each Wednesday at noon, usually at the MSC Aggie Dining Room, but this week’s meeting will be at Quick Mart (Valero). It’s a lovely break in the middle of the week to talk about how we can help our community while enjoying fellowship with friends and colleagues. Please join us!
