Everyone at the Chamber would like to offer the family of Ray Lokey and the Capital-Democrat our condolences on the loss of such a special person. Ray was incredibly passionate about this community and showed it through his active participation, willingness to help, and upbeat attitude. He will be missed.

This week we have a couple of events including a Lunch n’ Learn hosted by the Chickasaw Country Marketing Association on Thursday, November 16th at the Chickasaw Community Center from 11:00-1:00. That day is also the National Great American Smoke Out. The Chamber has partnered with several agencies in the community including the Johnston County Health Department to encourage those using tobacco to pledge to quit. There will be a pledge table at the pocket park from 10:30-1:30pm for the lunch hour and 4:30-6:00pm for the dinner hour. There will have a free walk starting at 5:15pm for anyone who has been affected directly or indirectly by tobacco use. At the end of the walk you will get to release a balloon with or without specific names on them (think Relay For Life). If someone you know would like to quit, encourage them to come to the pledge table, sign a pledge card, put their remaining tobacco products in a bowl and receive a discount card and a quit kit filled with resources to help them along their journey. This discount card is only active for that day. The current businesses offering their encouragement in this process includes: Kedford Co. Boutique, Motor Sales, Stepp West, Ole Red, Murray on Main, Rose Petal, Houser’s, Leopard Vine, Sunshine Boutique, City Nails, Indie Cinema, Baker’s Mercantile, Elizabeth’s Antiques, Boomarang Diner, Collins Chiropractic, Spa 211 and Gonzalez Mexican Restaurant. Austin-Rand Dental will choose one person out of the pledge cards to receive a free exam holding a $200 value. Choose to live a healthy life and quit!

The Refuge is hosting their Refuge Ramble #3 this Saturday, a program called Divers & Dabblers – Lunch Menu Review. Join the refuge Education Specialist for this puddle-jumping exploration of a few shorelines at different locations. Find out what ducks have come and what the attraction is. You’ll examine water’s edges and identify some of the plants and animals that live along the shorelines. Make sure to pack binoculars and/or spotting scopes if you have them and dress for the weather. You can call 580-371-2402 or email joanne_ryan@fws.gov to reserve your spot.

The Southern Oklahoma Alzheimer’s/Dementia Support Group will hold their regular meeting on Monday, November 20th at 5:30 p.m. at the Johnston County Library and the next city council meeting is that evening starting at 7:00 p.m.

Please make sure that you let me know your Shop Small Sale this week so that I can help you advertise! The Chamber will have a table set up at the pocket park on Small Business Saturday, November 25th with swag and totes and we will be letting shoppers know where the great buys are!

Thank you to our new/renewed members: The Wildflower, Rock Creek RV Park, PBR Equipment and Nacho Mama’s Casa!
